After an outbreak of the gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in a children’s hospital Oncology care unit, the origin of the infection was traced to the faucets in the sinks. All the faucets were then replaced and the angle of the water stream was adjusted to prevent splashing directly into the drain. Some of the sinks were also fitted with an automated sink drain disinfection system. In samples taken 18 months after the outbreak, the sinks with automated sink drain disinfection showed no contamination, while those which merely had faucets replaced still showed contamination.
